Systems Engineer I

Position Location

Farmington Hills, MI
This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Currently 5 days of on-site work per month are required.

Position Purpose

Member Driven Technology (MDT) is seeking an experienced System Engineer specializing in Linux and UNIX to design, build, secure, and operate critical workloads that power our credit union clients and fintech solutions.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deploy and configure Linux/Unix servers, including AIX on IBM Power Systems
  • Perform regular system maintenance and patching of Linux/Unix systems in accordance with security and compliance standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve OS-level issues and system performance bottlenecks.
  • Create, manage, and maintain user accounts and system access controls.
  • Monitor system health, performance, and resource utilization for Linux and Unix environments.
  • Administer OS-level components of the Symitar core banking system for credit union clients.
  • Implement system hardening and enforce security best practices across Linux/Unix platforms.
  • Develop and maintain operational documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), system diagrams, and knowledge base articles.
  • Write, maintain, and enhance automation scripts to streamline routine system tasks.
  • Manage SSL certificate lifecycle, including maintenance and renewal across all managed environments.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills when working with internal and external clients, with high attention to detail.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Deep knowledge and experience administering Linux/Unix servers in a regulated, 24×7 environment.

Required Knowledge

  • Deep knowledge of Linux/Unix systems, including one or more of the following: AIX (preferred), RHEL, or Ubuntu.
  • 2+ years of experience with SAN storage technologies, including architecture, configuration, and best practices.
  • 2+ years of experience with scripting and automation, preferring using KornShell (ksh); experience with Bash and Python is also beneficial.
  • Proficiency in hardening and operating OpenSSH and OpenSSL in secure Unix/Linux environments.
  • Strong understanding of virtualization concepts, (IBM PowerVM preferred).
  • Experience managing and supporting MySQL/MariaDB databases.
  • 2+ years of experience troubleshooting complex information systems, with working knowledge of TCP/IP networking, load balancing, DNS, NTP, SSL/TLS, and firewalls.
  • CompTIA Linux+ certification or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Hands-on cloud experience with GCP or AWS IaaS platforms preferred, including familiarity with IAM, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and CI/CD pipelines.

Working Conditions

  • Additional hours, including Saturday/Sunday and Holiday support, as required.
  • Occasional overnight travel for business purposes.
  • Long duration of computer usage.
  • When designated primary or secondary On-Call, remain available 24/7 via phone or pager.

The compensation is based on experience and offers a base salary plus bonus opportunities. We offer BCBS benefits, dental, disability and life insurance at 90 days and 401K after one year.
